Penguin Solutions is seeking a knowledgeable and industrious Senior Network Engineer to join the Managed Services team and apply their technical skills in a fast-paced and complex environment.  Working knowledge of network and server hardware and the desire to participate in projects at a large-scale data center is central to this role. This position will work to resolve and diagnose network issues at scale, escalate issues, and work with engineering teams. Additionally, this role will support rack lifecycle processes with a focus on helping build out and support cloud scale network and storage environments. Solid communication skills are a requirement for this role. This person should enjoy working in a fast-paced environment where adaptability and flexibility will be key to their success. Penguin supports HPC environments where performance is critical.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop network configurations and architectures, both project-based and roadmap aligned.
  • Design, enhance and maintain both InfiniBand and Ethernet networks.
  • Validate the network infrastructure with Solutions Architects and other field engineers for solutions to customers’ needs.
  • Lead and perform on-going maintenance and upgrades to network equipment.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation for internal and external build instructions - such as configuration examples, guidance on technical details, and best practices.
  • Coordinate with vendors and other related organizations for problem resolution.
  • Interact with internal and external teams and operate across organizations as needed.
  • Engage in learning and researching new technologies and developments.
  • Support a Linux-based, high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) environment, featuring a wide range of technologies.
  • Document processes, procedures, and all work performed.
  • Develop automation and other tools to improve operations.
  • Participate in growing Penguin Computing's technical capabilities through knowledge-sharing and team activities.

 

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience with enterprise scale networks.
  • In-depth knowledge of data center environments, servers, and network equipment.
  • Extensive experience in installing, monitoring, and maintaining data center network equipment.
  • Exceptional ability to work as part of a team, be an escalation point for technical support, and resolve problems.
  • Ability to keep up with advancements in data center infrastructure and technologies.
  • Proven experience with both InfiniBand (NVIDIA) and Ethernet (Cumulus/Arista/ Juniper) networks.
  • Proficiency in documenting network processes.
  • Participation in weekly on-call rotation.
  • Willingness to respond to network and server errors after hours.
  • Ability to speak English and communicate clearly and effectively with team members and clients.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in managing RDMA and/or RoCE environments.
  • Hands-on experience configuring and supporting large scale Ethernet and InfiniBand networks.
  • Demonstrated practice with low-latency, high-bandwidth networking performance optimization.
  • Experience with VXLAN and EVPN architectures and routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF.
  • Knowledge of HPC communication libraries such as NCCL, UCX and MPI and GPU networking capabilities such as NVLink and NVSwitch.
  • Familiarity with UFM or OpenSM network management software.
