Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical and thermal design of a groundbreaking class of silicon photonics memory appliances. This role is pivotal in shaping the physical architecture and thermal management strategies of next-generation high-performance memory systems that leverage the speed and scalability of silicon photonics.

You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, photonics experts, and system architects to deliver robust, manufacturable, and thermally optimized designs that push the boundaries of data center performance and energy efficiency.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to shape the future of AI infrastructure
  • Work with world-class engineers in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Flexible work arrangements and career development support

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical enclosures, chassis, and component layouts for silicon photonics-based memory appliances.
  • Engineer advanced thermal solutions including heat sinks, vapor chambers, and airflow management systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Perform detailed thermal simulations and mechanical stress analyses using tools like ANSYS, SolidWorks, or COMSOL.
  • Collaborate with photonics and electronics teams to ensure mechanical designs support optical alignment, signal integrity, and manufacturability.
  • Drive DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Select materials and components that meet performance, cost, and sustainability goals.
  • Work with vendors and manufacturing partners to validate prototypes and transition designs into production.
  • Document design specifications, test results, and engineering change orders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in high-performance computing, photonics, or data center hardware.
  • Proven expertise in thermal design and simulation for electronics or photonics systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) and thermal analysis software.
  • Strong understanding of materials science, heat transfer, and mechanical tolerancing.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and precision machining.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with silicon photonics packaging and alignment requirements.
  • Experience designing for high-density rack-mounted systems.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for EMI shielding, vibration, and shock.
  • Background in reliability testing and environmental compliance (e.g., RoHS, REACH).

Location

  • This is a hybrid position (3 days a week onsite) in Irvine, CA. This could also be remote in Newark, CA, but Irvine is preferred.
